The “featured” tables at big-box book stores, and the tabloids in supermarket checkout stands clearly illustrate the pervasiveness of popular diet programs. You cannot reach for a pack of gum in a grocery line without being visually assaulted by a surfeit of celebrity ass photos captioned with daffy headlines: “My butt used to look like a camel’s back covered with a two-inch layer of large-curd cottage cheese. After trying Dr. God’s ‘Miracle’ diet for two months it is now a rightsized silken altar on which men pray.” Keeping current on the myriad diets extolled by books, tabloids, television shows, and social media groups is beyond the bounds of possibility.
In this section I highlight the most “widely popular” diet programs and methods. For each, I offer a non-biased summary, a list of oft cited pros and cons, and in many cases my subjective thoughts.
