When I was seven my dad gave me a “build your own camera kit” for kids age twelve and up; it is possible he thought I was twelve. With my grandfather’s help, I assembled the camera in half an afternoon. The finished 110-film plastic camera was low-grade, low-tech, and decisively brilliant. I used it to take pictures of every non-worthwhile subject imaginable for the next several years. It was that single, pedestrian camera that sparked my love of photography.
